Brunello Di Montalcino
100% sangiovese grosso sourced from Montalcino in Tuscany
001 Ciacci Piccolomini 2016 (4 left)
97 pts. "Red-berry, wild-rose, crushed mint and dark-spice aromas are front and center on this fragrant red. The full-bodied palate is concentrated but also boasts finesse, offering layers of raspberry jam, smooth licorice and tobacco alongside a backbone of enveloping, velvety tannins. You’ll also detect the warmth of alcohol but the succulent fruit stands up to it." Wine Enthusiast
$99
002 Pietroso 2015
94 pts, Jeb Dunnuck. “Terrific notes of black cherries, currants, chocolate, and tobacco leaf nuances all emerge from the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino. This is pure class, offering medium to full-bodied richness, a focused, elegant texture, polished tannins, and a great finish. This classic, balanced beauty will evolve for 15-20 years. Drink 2020-2040.”
$107
003 Carpineto 2016 (4 left)
94 pts. "There is a warmth to the ripeness in this red, like sunbaked earth or bricks, surrounding the core of cherry and berry flavors. Very fresh and long, with iron, tobacco and wild herbs lingering as the rugged tannins exert their influence." Wine Spectator
$99
004 Pian delle Vigne, Antinori 2016 (2 left)
95 pts. This has an expressive nose offering aromas of ripe red berry, violet, star anise and coffee bean. Elegantly structured, the linear palate features mature black cherry, blood orange, ground clove and espresso alongside taut, fine-grained tannins that leave a firm finish. Give it several minutes to fully develop in the glass/decanter.
$114
005 Fiorita 2016
95 pts. Enticing aromas of menthol, ripe dark-skinned fruit, new leather and sandalwood lead the way. Boasting a heady combination of power and finesse, the full-bodied palate doles out ripe black cherry, raspberry jam, licorice and tobacco framed in firm, velvety tannins. Fresh acidity keeps the richness in check.
$99
006 Pertimali 2015
94 pts. Aromas of woodland berry, pine forest, truffle and dried herb emerge from the glass in this fragrant red. Full in weight but refined, the accessible palate offers dried cherry, black tea, star anise and a dollop of vanilla alongside polished tannins before a minty finish. Reflecting the hot vintage, it's already approachable but still offers good midterm aging potential. Drink 2021–2027.
$108
007 Mastrojanni 2016
95 pts. "The nose has an intense bouquet of cherry and pulpy, ripe plum embellished with spicy touches, earthy and mineral nuances and intriguing notes of undergrowth. On the palate the noble tannic texture of Sangiovese stretches tight and impressive but also velvety, balanced by acidity and juicy freshness that confers elegance and long persistence."
$96
008 Fanti Riserva 2010 (IT)
Ridiculous Deal! Fanti's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a standout expression and a profoundly beautiful creation. The bouquet peels off one delicate layer after the next and it grows in intensity along the way. This is the best wine I have yet tasted from Fanti's Filippo Baldassarre. The mouthfeel is moderate in weight and long in persistence. It glows with balsamic aromas of rosemary and ginger that are backed by ripe aromas of cherry and blackberry. Spice, leather and cola round off the finish.
$180
009 Ridolfi 2015
Red berry, crushed mint, camphor and toasted notes aromas form the nose. The austere, linear palate features sour cherry, coffee bean and a hint of clove set against fresh acidity while close-grained, drying tannins leave a grippy finish.
$77
010 Cava d'Onice 2015 (IT)
95 Points - James Suckling. "This is a beautiful Brunello with tulips, rose petals, freshly squeezed oranges, terracotta and lemon peel. Sleek and tightly wound on the medium-to full-bodied palate, the driven red fruit doing the work, and the bright complexion of acidity shining through. Structured and intricately detailed."
$97
011 Cava d'Onice 2016 (IT)
Intense aroma, where the hints of red ripe fruit, especially plum and blueberry, leave room for complex mineral and balsamic notes. Very balanced in the mouth, with solid and balanced body. The tannic structure is well blended to the other components. Pairing: pappardelle with wild boar, veal or steak, aged cheese.
$97
012 Cava d'Onice 2017 (IT)
This opens with aromas of sunbaked earth, spice and ripe dark-skinned fruit. The savory palate offers blackberry jam, licorice and white pepper alongside firm tannins. It's already accessible but will offer good midterm aging potential.
